4 facts about French

Number 1: Where it is spoken.

French is the official language of France and it’s also spoken inMonaco, Luxembourg, some parts of Belgium and Switzerland, in the Canadian province of Québec, parts of North and Central Africa, Vietnam, Cambodia, Madagascar and the French Overseas Departments and Territories.
It can still be heard in some communities of French origin in the USA, in Maine and Louisiana

Number 2: Most of us already know some French.

Since a large number of English words and expressions are of French origin, you’re actually already au fait with quite a lot of French vocabulary

Had a déjà vu lately? Did that glass of wine have a certain je ne sais quoi? In a restaurant or café, you might find olives, pâté, omeletteon the menu, along with soufflé or chocolate mousse for dessert. Feeling flush? Wash it all down with champagne. Ah, c’est la vie !

Number 3: Is it similar to other languages?

French is a Romance language, ie of Latin origin. Romance languages share a similar grammatical structure and there are often similarities in vocabulary

If you learn French, you’ll have a head start in learning other languages such as Spanish, Portuguese, Italian or Catalan.

Number 4: How can I be polite when speaking it?

Like other Romance languages, there are different ways of saying ‘you’:

Tu, for people you can be on first-name terms with, and
Vous, in other cases.
The plural in both cases is also vous

When greeting, men usually shake hands. In informal situations, women meeting men or other women will kiss them on the cheeks, although it’s more like quick ‘cheek-touching’ rather than a kiss. The number of kisses, bisous or bises, varies per region and can go up to four!

Point two
Be clear about, how good you want your english to be. How good do you want to be at speaking english? Listening… Reading… Writing…

Point Three
Have a clear image of yourself when you have achieved the proficiency that you want. What will you see? What will you hear? How will you feel?

Point four
If possible enroll on a language course, if you can’t put yourself in situations where you can use english which leads on to point five.

Point five
Look for opportunities to learn and use english. Speak english whenever you can, listen to the radio and CDs in english, read and write in english. If you look for opportunities you will find them.

Point six
Write down new words and phrases in a notebook, keep the notebook with you. So you can look at it when you have a spare moment.

Point eight
Find the learning buddy or colleague. Find someone you can learn english with. Speak with each other, send each other messages in english.

Point nine
Learn little and often. Make it a habit to learn english for 10 minutes each day, this is much better than learning for longer once a week.

Point ten
And a final point at the beginning of a learning period, ask yourself. What do I want to learn today?. At the end of a learning period, ask yourself. What have I learned today?

There is a story about a teacher who told his students “you know you’re making progress in english when you speak in english, think in english and dream in english”. One day a student came into the class very excited and said teacher… teacher. “Last night I dreamed in english”. The teacher said “That’s wonderful, what did you dream about?”.
