“A” is placed before words that begin with consonants.

  • a cat
  • a dog
  • a post
  • a large car

“An” goes before words that begin with vowels:

  • an egg
  • an apple
  • an epic journey
  • an uprising

Use “an” before unsounded “h.

  • an honorable decision
  • an honest man

When “u” makes the same sound as the “y” in “you,” or “o” makes the same sound as “w” in “won,” then a is used.

  • a union
  • a united group
  • a used car
